Introduction to Quelimane

Quelimane is the biggest city and capital of the Zambezia Province, in Mozambique. It is located near the River of the Good Signs, about 20 km from the Indian Ocean. It is geographically delimited by the district of Nicoadala to the northwest and Inhassunge to the south. Given its coastal geographical location, maritime commerce and fishing are its main economic activities.

Fishing is still one of Quelimane’s main economic activities, along with agriculture (palm trees, rice and vegetables). Given its topographic and hydrographic status, as well as the fact the population expanded to risk areas, the city is prone to floods.
