Introduction to Praia

Praia is the capital of Cape Verde, an archipelago country in the Atlantic Ocean, to the West of Senegal. It is located on the South of Santiago Island, and also as the seat of the Praia municipality. As the largest city in Cape Verde, Praia includes a trade port to export coffee, sugar cane, and tropical fruits. Besides this, fishing is also an essential industry to this city.

As the capital, Praia is located in the Plateau coastal area. At the end of the 19th century, public buildings and other vital infrastructures were built, such as the Presidential Palace, the Portuguese governor’s residence. Other facilities include the old city council, a building with a classic facade and a central square tower, the Church of Our Lady of Grace, also built in the classicist style, the Ethnographic Museum and the Diogo Gomes Monument (Monumento de Diogo Gomes), in memory of a Portuguese navigator who discovered Santiago Island in 1460.
